Reflections

A major theme in The Cooling Board is family.

With Mother's Day around the corner, what advice did your mom give you that you didn't want to take at first, but was 100% on point?

Reviews for The Cooling Board

After reading Tamara Angela Grant's first book, "Promises Made, Promises Kept," I said I'd be looking for her next release and was extremely happy to see that she'd been published again.

In "The Cooling Board" we meet the Darling family in Regal City, Louisiana. Unfortunately, the family has come together to bury Lulu Bell Darling Devereaux, the stitch that held this madness called a family together. All hell breaks loose as the family forgets that in this time of bereavement they should lean on one another for love and support instead of viciously going on the attack. As the family prepares for the last will and testament, Lulu Bell has her final say.

Will her crazy relatives utilize her words of wisdom and adjust themselves accordingly? Or has her loss caused an eternal rip for the Darling Devereaux family? I sincerely enjoyed "The Cooling Board." Set in the late 60's it's easy to vividly transcend into the setting, wording and hot button topics representative of that time. Regal City, Louisiana, is just as much apart of "The Cooling Board" as is the very eccentric family that readers will lovingly embrace, and in many cases relate to. Secrets, lies, jealousy and stubbornness have prevented them for so long to truly operate as a real family.

I guarantee that in reading this you're sure to reflect on your own family ties, the mending of fences, tears, laughter, all the while anxiously awaiting the turning of the pages. Now that I'm married, I realize that my husband's family, despite our differences, is my family as well. Initially that was not my understanding and I didn't plan to blend, mix or settle into his family because I felt like they were just that, his family. Besides, I had my own nutty family to deal with. Needless to say, I was wrong. While you can't choose your relatives, you can elect not to overindulge in some of the more outlandish parts. Now that I'm wiser, married, and a mom, I can fully appreciate all of the drama that makes up my uniquely crazy family and respectively have learned to value the time that we have.

Kudos, Tamara, for shining the light on families! Continued success!

The matriarch of the Darling-Devereaux family, Lulu Bell, has gone on to her glory. While everyone is trying to deal with the pain and regret, it's more difficult to have to deal with one another as the tension continually builds. Lulu Bell decided long before passing that the only way to get her family together was for everyone to make amends. The problem now is without her presence the family feels that they don't have to do anything.

Can Lulu Bell work a miracle from the grave? Or is trying to resolve the Darling-Devereaux issues too much? Tamara Grant has written a delightful story about a family with all of their imperfections, bitterness, justifications, sorrow and ways of life.

THE COOLING BOARD makes for great reading and I believe that it's the perfect book for a club discussion.

2 days left to enter the contest!!

I could wring her neck! I try to keep my cool, but it’s so hard. Are sisters supposed to bicker like this? Therese is exasperating! And then she’s always with Lorraine. I know Lorraine is family, but she really takes the cake. I can’t believe she’s the First Lady of any church with the way she acts. The two of them are always signifying. It’s always got to be all eyes on them. It’s really ridiculous and completely juvenile. They are supposed to be grown women, mothers at that! I can’t even grieve my own mother’s death properly. I feel like it’s them against me. Lucien left me here saying he had to tend to some patients. I know what he was really doing. Wait till he gets back! I didn’t need him to leave me with my family for any quality time. I should have jumped in that car with him. I don’t care about a Last Will and Testament. Just mail me whatever my mama left for me, so long as I can return to my easy life!I have an auntie that keeps pushing her daughter to be a singer and the child can’t carry a note, an uncle that won’t even speak to his own son. And my brother? God knows I love him, but he better put a muzzle on that wife of his! My sister is as bitter as fresh squeezed lemons…. I can’t take it. Now I remember why I left…..

An excerpt from The Cooling Board

People came from the next town over to Regal City, Louisiana when they heard that Mrs. LuluBell Darling Devereaux was on her deathbed. News traveled fast in the quaint little towns and before they knew it, there were more visitors calling on Mrs. 'Bell than the Darling and Devereaux homes could handle.People poured in, offering their very best recipes and dishes for the family to eat. It was just common courtesy to bring food over in times like these. The Solid Rock Methodist Church (Mrs. 'Bell's home church) brought enough gumbo to feed ten families.

The neighbor next door, Mrs. Kara Lee Bonner brought her famous fried chicken over. Mr. Taylor, the neighbor just up the road, well, he couldn't cook anything, but he offered to tend to Mrs. 'Bell's award winning rose garden (and 'Bell's brother, JB quickly denied the request as nicely aspossible- for JB that is!). A steady stream of visitors came by offering constant gifts of food and prayers for the family and Mrs. 'Bell hadn't even passed away yet. The residents of Regal City weren't even sure what was ailing her.

"I heard she had a heart attack while working in her prize winning garden. Just passed out among the roses."

"Well, I heard she ate some bad crawfish. You know we had a bad harvest this year."

"No honey. I heard she caught a bad cold. You know. A chill from being down there near that river at night."

"Chere, you crazy."

"Well, that's what I heard!"

"Why won't somebody just ask JB?"

Everybody knew why nobody asked JB Darling was wrong with his sister, LuluBell.

JB was crazy.

When visitors came by, he stood watching his time piece intently.

"My sister don't need to catch your germs! Two minutes! Ya hear!" JB would say as he leaned against the door frame, counting down your visiting time. With the way JB ranted, you best be leaving Mrs. 'Bell's bedside at one minute and fifty nine seconds. With JB serving as gate keeper, and not a word uttered from Mrs. 'Bell's sisters Mamie Lee and Connie Sue, gossip was afloat in Regal City. No one knew just what was ailing Mrs. LuluBell Darling Devereaux, but it was common knowledge that the angels would soon come to carry her on Home to Glory.
